In Shanghai, there are some Western-style houses, some of which are standalone villas, and others are apartment buildings. Partly inspired by the Chinese 'hutong' style housing in the capital and heavily influenced by French and British colonial as well as Art Deco styles, these houses were constructed in large numbers between the late 19th century and World War Two. These houses boast a rich history, with many interiors having undergone renovations, preserving the original Shanghai charm while incorporating a contemporary design sensibility.
